This ‘Seated Bishop’ is a masterpiece of sensitive characterization.
This is on display at the Cloisters collection in New York. It’s a beautiful, expressive portrait, although art historians are not sure which bishop this is meant to represent - perhaps Augustine or Ambrose. While it is technically a relief, obviously part of a larger altar work, it feels remarkably rounded.
