One of Riemenschneider’s most evocative works, this tomb effigy for the bishop Rudolf von Scherenberg is located on the left-hand side of the main nave in Kiliandom, the Würzburg Cathedral. It’s on a column directly next to a pew, so if you worship at there you can sit directly next to Herr Von Scherenberg.
Rudolf’s presence is stunning, and the characterization of the face is something to behold. This piece is also notable as the V&A in London has full-scale cast, which is featured in its Cast Court.
The primary carving is done in a local marble, with sandstone details surrounding it.
