Originally located on the in the chapel at Aub, this altarpiece carving was part of a pair. This wing depicts the birth of Christ, and the matched pair represented the visiting of the Magi.
This piece is a wonderful example of the depth and detail Riemenschneider was capable of in limewood. The curly hair and beards are always fun to examine, but note also the square recessed/opening in Joseph’s mug/lantern!
